You may have at one time or another asked the question, “Does walking help you lose weight?” For a lot of amateur fitness enthusiasts, they probably got into the whole thing by starting out with walking. It’s easy, cost-free, and you can easily fit it into your schedule. You can even go with a whole group.

Walking is so much a part of our everyday activities that even if you make it into a part of a weight-loss program, it doesn’t really make you feel like you’re losing weight. But then, that’s also what makes walking so appealing: all you need are your feet, no gadgets, gear, or even trips to the gym necessary – yet you can already change your figure.

To make sure that you’re walking to help lose weight, here are additional steps (no pun intended) you can take:

  1. Walking has to be done before breakfast. Let’s face it; walking is an exercise with a very low intensity level. It will get your heart pumping but not quite enough that you would burn a lot of calories when you’re finished walking. So, you’ll have to do it before breakfast. This will make sure your body uses up your fat stores for energy and not the food you would’ve had for breakfast.
  2. Walk fast. If you want to walk to help you lose weight, you need to do it a lot harder than you usually do. Walking as an exercise is not a walk in the park, or at least not at that pace. You need to speed up your pace, and move your arms along.
  3. You need to be walking for at least 45 minutes. There are researches that indicate that when you exercise, you don’t start using up your fat stores until around 30 minutes. This means that for the first part of your workout, your body is using up calories for energy. Some fat may be burned but it’s not enough to help you lose weight. So make sure you walk for at least 45 minutes if you want to get rid of your excess fat stores.
  4. Your walking sessions need to have progress. Don’t just walk at the same pace for the same distance for the same length of time every day. Walking is already a low-intensity exercise; you won’t get anywhere if you don’t take things up a notch.
  5. Take after-dinner walks. You wouldn’t really be doing anything much after dinner, whatever calories you take in will just get stored up as fat while you’re asleep. Take a walk and use up some of those calories.
